Word Counter
How to use the word counter
Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update as you type, so you can see your word count, characters, sentences and paragraphs at a glance. The reading and speaking times help when you are preparing a speech or checking how long your essay takes to read.
Why word count matters for essays
Most assignments set a word limit. Going far over or under can cost marks, and many teachers allow only a small margin, often around ten percent. Always check the rules in your own assignment brief, including whether headings, quotations and the reference list are counted.
Frequently asked questions
Does the word counter include headings and references?
It counts everything you paste into the box. Remove sections your assignment does not count, such as the bibliography, before you check your total.
How is reading time worked out?
We assume an average reading speed of about 200 words per minute and a speaking speed of about 130 words per minute. Your own pace may be faster or slower.
Is my text saved?
No. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers.
